Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.

Hot-finished and cold-formed steel box sections are differentiated primarily by their manufacturing processes and the resultant properties. Hot-finished box sections are shaped at temperatures above the steel’s recrystallisation point, leading to a consistent grain structure throughout the section and eliminating residual stresses. This process ensures that the steel doesn’t warp or distort after cutting or when subjected to external loads. The corners of hot-finished sections are generally more rounded, and they’re often employed in structural contexts where consistent behavior under load is paramount.
On the other hand, cold-formed box sections are produced at or near room temperature. The lack of heat during the shaping introduces residual stresses due to work hardening, making the material’s behavior less predictable in certain scenarios. These sections might display variations in strength or ductility at different parts, especially at sharper corners resulting from the cold-forming process. Despite these differences, cold-formed sections are favored in non-critical structures or applications where tighter dimensional tolerances are beneficial.
Uniform Strength: Their symmetrical shape provides consistent strength in all directions, making them highly resistant to torsional, axial and lateral loads.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: The hollow nature of these sections means they deliver comparable strength with less material, resulting in a lighter overall structure. This not only reduces material costs but also eases transportation and installation.
Aesthetics: The geometric, clean lines of steel box sections are favored in contemporary architecture, providing a sleek and modern appearance.
Versatility: These sections are suitable for a variety of applications, from primary structural elements to aesthetic features.
Facilitation of Services: The hollow interior can be used to route services like electrical conduits or plumbing, offering integrated solutions in building designs.
Corrosion Resistance: With appropriate treatments like galvanising or painting, steel box sections can withstand environmental challenges, increasing their longevity.
Cost-Effective: Their efficient use of material and ease of installation often result in cost savings for construction projects.
Steel box sections, or hollow structural sections (HSS), are adept at handling load-bearing due to their unique geometric configuration. Their symmetrical and uniform shape means they exhibit consistent strength properties in all directions, making them especially effective at resisting torsional (twisting) forces. Additionally, their broad, flat surfaces are ideal for distributing loads, which minimises local stresses and reduces the risk of buckling. The hollow nature of these sections provides a high strength-to-weight ratio, enabling them to support significant loads while using less material than solid sections. This makes them not only economical but also advantageous in situations where weight savings are crucial. Furthermore, the enclosed cavity of the box section can be utilised for added stability by filling it with concrete or other materials in specific high-load applications. As a result, steel box sections are a preferred choice in construction for their load-bearing efficiency, spanning a range of projects from building frameworks to bridge supports.
