Mild steel sheet metal is a versatile material that is used in a range of applications such as car panels, ductwork, and metal roofing. It’s produced in a range of thicknesses, with 1mm mild steel sheet being a popular choice. The mild steel DC01 grade, produced by Speciality Metals, is a great choice for general fabrication and welding due to its excellent formability and strength. And if you’re wondering about painting it, the good news is that mild steel sheet can be painted to match your desired finish. But what about corrosion?
While mild steel is not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steel, it can still withstand moderate exposure to moisture and environmental elements, making it a practical and cost-effective option for many projects.
Mild sheet steel metal plate is the most popular product that we offer. It is a quality strong metal for myriad DIY and industrial applications. The uses for mild steel plate metal include automotive bodywork, boxes and security doors.
Mild steel sheet is an incredibly versatile material that is widely used in a variety of industries. Speciality Metals’ 1mm mild steel sheet metal, specifically DC01 grade, is a popular choice for those looking for a high-quality, plain steel product. One of the advantages of this type of mild steel sheet is its ability to be painted, making it a popular choice for construction projects that require a specific color or design. However, it’s important to note that mild steel sheet is not naturally resistant to corrosion, so it’s essential to take the necessary precautions to protect it from rust. Nonetheless, when properly maintained, mild steel sheet can offer a durable and cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications.
We also offer mild steel off-cuts too if that suits your requirement better.
Sheet metal is also available in aluminium and stainless steel.
Speciality Metals is known to be the United Kingdom’s best up-and-coming small-quantity metal company.
Furthermore we stock a vast range of plain sheet plate options that compliment our mesh range perfectly.

Mild steel is a fairly ductile material as it contains a smaller amount of the hardening alloy (carbon) than similar carbon steels. It’s tensile strength is therefore low (400MPa) due to this lower carbon content. If you do require a higher tensile strength then we suggest that you search for high carbon steel.
When we speak about tensile strength we are referring to what is simply the maximum amount of stress a specific material can withstand without breaking when being stretched and pulled. This is measured using a tensile strength test, which involves taking a sample of the material and placing it in a tensometer. The analyst then test the type of steel by increasing the force on the material until it fractures and fragments. Some metals break without any deforming occurring, whereas other more ductile materials will stretch a small amount.
Tensile strength is then measured as a force per unit area. The unit of measure being a pascal (Pa)/megapascal(MPa), a newton per square metre (N/m2) or pounds-force per square inch (psi).
Due to its strength and ductility, DC01 grade mild steel at a thickness of 1mm is a versatile material that can be applied across a wide range of industries due to its balance between strength and ductility. Usually, this grade of mild steel is used in the manufacture of parts that require a moderate amount of forming or bending in order to function properly. It’s commonly found in automotive body panels, domestic appliances like refrigerators and washing machines, as well as in the construction industry for ductwork and roofing. As a result of its workability, it is also a popular choice for sculpture and metalworking projects within the realm of art. Its suitability for welding and its relatively low cost compared to other materials make 1mm DC01 grade mild steel a popular choice for both industrial applications and DIY projects. A mild steel is a material that is strong, reliable, and can provide a good foundation for many manufactured goods and structures as a result of its name.
There is no doubt that mild steel of 1mm DC01 grade can be bent. Among mild steel’s key characteristics is its excellent ductility, which means that it is a material that can be shaped and formed without breaking or cracking despite its excellent ductility. This includes bending the material. However, it’s important to be careful when doing so. If you bend the steel too sharply, you may cause it to weaken or possibly tear, which is why you should avoid doing so.
A variety of methods can be used to bend mild steel. For thin sheets like a 1mm thickness, simple hand tools may suffice for creating bends. It might be necessary to use a sheet metal brake or a press brake if the bend needs to be more complex or precise. In addition, it is also worth mentioning that mild steel has a relatively low melting point, which means that it can be heated in order to make bending more straightforward for more substantial or complicated pieces of steel.
You should always take proper safety precautions when working with metal, especially if you are working with heat.
