Angular iron is a very popular and useful material used in both small and large scale projects. Made from plain mild steel, it’s got low carbon content but is a strong and versatile tool perfect for constructing with.
Angular iron, also known as angle bar, is formed when a strip of plain steel flat bar is bent in the centre to a 90 degree right angle. This is achieved by using an industrial mill and a method called the hot rolling process.
The hot rolling process is a technique typically used in metal and construction industries to shape steel or iron into a different form. This is done when heating the steel or iron to a high temperature of 926 degrees Celsius in a blast furnace. It’s then put through a mill which is also heated to a high temperature. Next it’s rolled into a 90 degree right angle down the centre to make angular iron.
The steel or iron is then left to cool which sets and shrinks the metal in it’s new form. This process is most recommended to change the form of metal as not only is it easier but it’s also more cost effective than cold rolled steel or iron.
The cold rolling process is a method where metal strips or sheets are passed through a pair of rollers to compress it into a new form at room temperature. This is a much more expensive and labour-intensive operation. This is because the metal is not initially heated therefore it’s takes much longer to reform.
Mild steel, also know as plain steel, is a low carbon metal with great mechanical and building properties. As it isn’t combined with other alloys apart from a small amount of carbon, this makes it a strong and versatile material for constructing with as there are lots you can do with it.
Plain Steel has great forming and welding abilities, it’s also suitable for painting on as mild steel doesn’t have any protective coatings which would resist paint.
However it does have some drawbacks, firstly it’s quite a heavy weight metal. This can make it awkward to work with and it can also have a rough surface due to rusting however rust can be removed using WD40 or fine sanding. Furthermore, plain steel is not resistant to corrosion due to having no protective layers. This means over time it will rust however adding a layer paint will give it protection. You can also use galvanised steel or stainless steel if you require a corrosion resistant metal.
Mild Steel is also a magnetic alloy therefore magnets will stick to this metal but mild steel isn’t a magnet itself.
The grade we supply for mild steel angular iron bar is DC01 grade. This is a cold-rolled, high quality form of mild steel specifically suited for bending, welding and forming. This grade is part of DC steel family and has the highest melting point against the other grades of mild steel. It also allows it to stick to magnets but it won’t stick to other metals.
